Meredith Monk: Dolmen Music review: 3 out of 5 stars

Next time you feel like dropping acid, buy Meredith Monk’s Dolmen Music album. Obviously, EMC record label was when they released this CD. From the beginning of the album, the constant beat and few harmonic sounds would confuse you for being stuck in the mystical trees of the Amazon. Monk calls those who listen… literally. In the first and third tracks the gradual addition of voices at various pitches creates a tribal-like sound. This is not like track two, in which a cello sets the tone. If it weren’t for the deep lull of the cello, I would space out completely, my mind would be lost FOREVER… Monk, a dance and video artist as well as composer and musician, is consider to be part of “Downtown Scene” in New York City. Dolmen Music really is “downtown”…way down, over, and above the town. In the fourth track, Monk uses no voices but many instrumentals instead. The instrumentals are like that of Boards of Canada or Eluvium. Her goal: create the least possible amount of minimal harmonies as one artist can, while still belonging to a legitimate record label. The sixth track is purely a holiday carol gone mad. Regardless of how unconventional her compositions are, they are still engaging. It is as though she’s trying to say something, yet, literally cannot get it out. So if you’re down for tripping and want some alien music to jam out to, buy Meredith Monk: Dolmen Music and imagine you are on a farm.
